Towards Visual Sensor Networks Related Research on Micro Air Vehicles

چکیده
The increased performance of small scale computing platforms enables the use of a growing number of computer vision algorithms previously limited to desktop computers. This makes visual sensor networks feasible in the close future and could lead to a convergence between distributed sensing and computer vision research fields. This paper provides an introduction to efficient computer vision approaches suitable for small scale platforms using the example of Micro Air Vehicles (MAV). The PIXHAWK MAV computer vision project is described in detail to show the technical implications as well as the resulting research challenges.

Vision-guided flight stability and control for micro air vehicles
Substantial progress has been made recently towards designing, building and test-flying remotely piloted Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) and small UAVs. We seek to complement this progress in overcoming the aerodynamic obstacles to flight at very small scales with a vision-guided flight stability and autonomy system, based on a robust horizon detection algorithm. In this paper, we first motivate the ...

Recent advances in state estimation, planning, mapping, and control algorithms combined with ever-increasing computational power available onboard micro air vehicles have enabled a number of researchers to demonstrate advanced autonomous capabilities in GPS-denied environments. Much of this work has focused around the use of laser range-finder sensors, however the use of a 2D sensor in a 3D env...

In the present paper, an efficient method for three dimensional aircraft pattern recognition is introduced. In this method, a set of simple area based features extracted from silhouette of aerial vehicles are used to recognize an aircraft type from its optical or infrared images taken by a CCD camera or a FLIR sensor. These images can be taken from any direction and distance relative to the fly...

Autonomous in-flight air refueling is an important capability for the future deployment of unmanned air vehicles, since they will likely be ferried in flight to overseas theaters of operation instead of being shipped unassembled in containers. This paper introduces a vision sensor based on active deformable contour algorithms, and a relative navigation system that enables precise and reliable b...
